About MAKE Farm Field Trips

At MAKE we care about food, education and community.
We are excited to bring the younger generations to be part of the fun!

Our hands-on, ecological curriculum is geared for K-8 students in alignment with NGSS Standards.
Get ready for an exciting field trip to the farm! We'll explore different stations where you can learn by observing, using your senses, investigating, and getting your hands dirty with fun activities!

Elementary School (K-2)

Theme: Who’s Who in the Food Web

Description:

Students meet the farm’s decomposers, producers, and consumers through hands-on activities. They’ll explore worm composting, hunt for pollinators, and taste foods from the garden while learning how all living things depend on each other.

Activities:

Food web activity
Compost detective
Pollinator bingo
Garden taste test using the 5 senses

NGSS:

K-LS1-1: Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals

(including humans) need to survive.

1-LS3-1: Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that young

plants and animals are like, but not exactly like, their parents.

2-LS2-1: Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow.

2-LS4-1: Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life

in different habitats.

Elementary School (3-5)

Theme: Biodiversity & Interdependence

Description:

Students investigate how the farm works as a living system where plants and people interact. They’ll rotate through stations exploring compost biodiversity, plant adaptations, and healthy food diversity.

Activities:

Compost biodiversity investigation
Global Garden scavenger hunt
Pollinator bingo
Store vs. garden tasting comparison

NGSS:

3-LS3-2: Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment.

3-LS4-3: Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.

4-LS1-1: Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.

5-LS2-1: Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.

Middle School (6-8)

Theme: Ecosystems & Human Impact

Description:Students examine how decomposers, producers, and consumers cycle matter and energy on the farm. They’ll investigate soil health, biodiversity’s role in pest management, and how food choices impact the environment.

Activities:

Compost activity
Mapping farm biodiversity and plant-pollinator relationships
Food tasting with a focus on nutrition, soil health, and food miles

NGSS:

MS-LS2-1: Analyze data to show how availability of resources affects organisms and populations.

MS-LS2-2: Construct explanations predicting patterns of organism interactions across ecosystems.

MS-LS2-3: Develop a model to describe the cycling of matter and flow of energy among living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem.

MS-LS2-5: Evaluate design solutions for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services.
