September 2025

Our new home sits at 4712 Felton Street and was once the Jackson Electric Company, which fabricated the historic Normal Heights sign hanging over Adams Avenue. The front half of the building - about 70 years old - has great bones and we’ll be housing our dining rooms in it. Our construction activities this month include all the work below ground in the back for new plumbing, grease traps and foundation for our new kitchen and bathrooms.

Joe Jackson's hand and invoice. Our landlord gave this poster to us and it is silently watching over the project from the corner of Dining Room 1 for good luck. What we can be sure about is that it does feel amazing to inhabit real San Diego history while also contributing to its dynamic future.

Our property is a double lot! Look at all that patio space below. We are blessed with this incredible outdoor yard that will have an outdoor bar and culinary garden. For those of you who remember our first MAKE Cafe and Garden home on 30th Street, this new home is basically going to replicate that in permanent brick-and-mortar form! (No more lugging tables, chairs and a coffee cart back and forth twice a day!)

OK, let's call this the BEFORE photo. Just you wait - this will soon be a beautiful garden abuzz with birds, butterflies and happy humans.
